Pipework insulation

Although pipework insulation is a non-listed technology, individual products can qualify for an Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) if they meet the criteria set out in the Energy Technology Criteria List.

Claiming an ECA
Energy technology criteria for pipework insulation are based on compliance with the British Standard BS5422. This specifies the various thicknesses of insulation required for different circumstances, so it’s impossible to list individual products on the Energy Technology Product List. Each case must be considered in isolation.

The company buying the equipment should get written confirmation from their supplier that the pipework insulation and any attachments have been fitted in line with BS5422.

Using this, the company should be able to work out what percentage of its purchase qualifies for an ECA and submit a claim.

Finding a supplier
The ECA website contains details of manufacturers who have completed Energy Technology List self-assessment against the criteria for pipework insulation.

These suppliers are best placed to advise companies on buying and installing lighting products that qualify for an ECA. However, not all their products will necessarily be eligible. When investing in new technology, businesses should always specify in writing to their supplier that they want products that qualify for an ECA.
