Pipework insulation

Distribution losses from a heating or cooling system can account for as much as 20% of the total energy used. Insulating the pipework effectively can reduce these losses.

It’s also important to look out for leaks in valves and test points. These are often forgotten when insulating pipework, but can account for 5% of the energy used if not properly sealed.

The energy technology criteria for pipework insulation are based on compliance with British Standard BS5422. This specifies what thickness of insulation is needed in different circumstances, so it’s not possible to include specific products on the Energy Technology Product List (ETPL).

The company buying the equipment should get written confirmation from their supplier that the pipework insulation and any attachments have been fitted in line with BS5422. Using this, the company should be able to work out what percentage of its purchase qualifies for an ECA and submit a claim. Click here for more information.
